Meike Zehlike

 

Meike Zehlike holds a PhD degree graded Summa Cum Laude from Humboldt-University of Berlin, where she worked on Fairness and Discrimination in Rankings and Search under the supervision of Ulf Leser, as well as Carlos Castillo (UPF Barcelona), and Krishna Gummadi (Max-Planck-Institute for Software Systems). Her dissertation consists of several seminal publications that are among the most cited in the field of fair rankings. She received several grants and awards for her research, such as the Humboldt-Price 2022 for the best dissertation, the Google Scholarship Women Techmaker Award 2019, the ELLIS PhD fellowship 2019, and the Data Transparency Lab Research Grant 2017.

After her PhD she joined Zalando as a Senior Research Scientist. Additionally she works as a self-employed AI consultant for the labor union IG metall and the related works councils, as well as an external lecturer for Trustworthy Machine Learning at Humboldt University. Apart from her scientific work she invests much time into the knowledge transfer from the research communities to the general public: she regularly publishes articles in news papers, and speaks in podcasts and TV documentaries. She also joined the AI standardization initiative of DIN in 2022. At the moment she visits the Complexity Science Hub as a Postdoc to work on network fairness together with Fariba Karimi and Lisette Espin-Noboa.

Meike Zehlike schloss ihre Dissertation 2022 mit dem Prädikat Summa Cum Laude im Fach Informatik an der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin ab. Sie arbeitete zum Thema Fairness und Diskriminierung in Suchalgorithmen unter Prof. Ulf Leser, Prof. Carlos Castillo (UPF Barcelona) und Prof. Krishna Gummadi (Max-Planck-Institut für Software-Systeme). Ihre Dissertation setzt sich aus mehreren wegweisenden Veröffentlichungen zusammen, die zu den meist-zitierten im Bereich Fairness in Rankings gehören. Für ihre Arbeit erhielt sie zahlreiche Auszeichnungen und Forschungsstipendien, unter anderem den Humboldt-Preis 2022 für die beste Dissertation, das Google-Stipendium Women Techmaker Award 2019, das Fellowship Programm der ELLIS (European League of Learning and Intelligent Systems) society 2019, sowie den Data Transparency Lab Research Grant 2017.

Meike arbeitet heute als Senior Research Scientist bei Zalando, als externe Dozentin an der Humboldt-Universität und als selbstständige Beraterin zum Thema KI-Ethik für die Gewerkschaft IG Metall und deren zugeordnete Betriebsräte. Neben ihren wissenschaftlichen Publikationen trägt sie viel zum Transfer ihrer Forschungsergebnisse in die Praxis bei: sie veröffentlicht regelmäßig Zeitungsartikel, tritt in Podcasts und Fernsehdokumentationen auf, und beteiligt sich an Normierungsinitiativen für KI-Systeme. Derzeit ist sie als Visiting Post-Doc am Complexity Science Hub in Wien und forscht zusammen mit Fariba Karima und Lisette Espin-Noboa zum Thema Network Fairness.
